Our aim is to forage safely, ethically, sustainably and within the law.
1. Identification
Be 100% certain on ID before you eat anything wild. "If in doubt, leave it out!"
Never consume a wild plant or mushroom unless you can positively identify it from multiple reliable sources. We suggest at least three cross-references. Some UK species are DEADLY.
2. UK-specific advice
Identification rules and lookalikes vary by country. Our guidance applies only to UK species and UK foraging laws.
3. Forage within the law
The Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 allows personal picking of the “4 F’s” on common land: fruit, foliage, flowers and fungi. Uprooting wild plants is illegal. Always check local bylaws, which may restrict foraging in certain parks and boroughs.
4. Pick responsibly
Take only what you need for personal use. As a rule of thumb, never more than half of what you find. We want to protect wildlife, and let the plant or mushroom grow back stronger for next season!
5. Avoid SSSIs
Sites of Special Scientific Interest are protected for good reason - rare habitats and species - avoid them entirely.
6. Nature reserves
Foraging is often allowed for personal use, but rules vary. Always check with the site first.
7. Farmland
Stick to public paths, don’t pick crops, and be aware of pesticide spray. Straying off rights of way may be trespassing, so ask the farmer if unsure.
8. Commercial foraging
Generally illegal on public land. Many areas enforce strict bans, especially around London. Commercial foraging is only legal with permission on private land.
9. Private property
Always get the landowner’s permission. Most people are happy to share if asked - just take only what they’re comfortable giving.
