Childwall Woods – Sat 11 April 2026

Price

£30.00

Only 15 minutes from Liverpool city centre, this nature reserve is made up of semi-natural woodlands, planted in the 1700s in the grounds of the old Childwall Hall, as well as wet grassland and meadow-scrub mosaic landscapes.

This diversity is ideal for foraging, and the old woodland boasts a huge range of fungi (October being the best time for these). There is also a very rare tree to hunt for - a variegated oak! Keep your eyes peeled...

We will also briefly pop across to the Black Wood (another ancient Beech wood) to find a specimen of Douglas Fir (the very best conifer for green needle tea – it smells like citrus/grapefruit, or Lilt!).

Important: There are NO TOILETS available at this location.

Location: Childwall Woods, Countisbury Drive, Liverpool L16 0JJ.

Date: Saturday 11 April 2026

Parking: Free parking roadside at the Countisbury Drive entrance.

Start time: 10am

End time:  1pm

What to Expect

We’ll start with a short lesson on the basics of foraging including safety, legality and ethics.

Then we’ll head out on a walk to see what wild edibles we can find! Depending on season and habitat, this will include foliage, flowers, fruits and fungi. We will also use any opportunity to impart extra nature knowledge, whether that’s bird spotting, ecology, history or toxicology - it’s not all about food!

You can expect friendly and informal tuition, and to be involved in the process! Foraging is a hands-on pursuit. At the end of our walk, we’ll review what’s in our forager’s basket, discuss cooking ideas, and share a drink of fantastic pine needle tea.

What to Bring

Prepare for a day spent outdoors. We suggest at least:

  • Warm and waterproof clothing
  • Sturdy Footwear

  • Notebook and pen
  • A group foraging basket will be provided. You are welcome to bring your own.
